Health clubs often focus their attention on new memberships, however, retaining your existing members is just as important. According to IHRSA, the attrition rate of the average health club is 28.6%. Effectively engaging your members is vital in improving your health club member retention. Below, you will find 4 ways to improve retention and connect with your members.

Intervention Planning

According to Precor, intervention planning is a great tool in increasing retention. After receiving one interaction from staff, a member is 20% more likely to revisit a health club again. The percentage goes all the way to 80% if a member receives four or more interactions. Teaching your staff to engage and interact with members is an easy and effective way to keep your members coming back.

Create A Staff Culture That Appreciates Every Member

Members like to be appreciated and acknowledged. Make it a priority that all staff members go out of their way in being courteous to members. Actions such as holding the doors for members, smiling and asking how they are doing shows the member that the club appreciates them by teaching their staff that every member is important.

Stay Connected

Sometimes, it can be easy to lose motivation. Missing a week of workouts could be a sign of a disengaged member. Your members may need that extra boost to help them get back into the swing of things. Sending out motivating emails will help keep you connected to your members and show them that you care about their progress.

Build A Community

Platforms such as Facebook and Instagram helps you engage your members and keep them motivated. Organize social events, add new classes, create a gym challenge and promote these events on your chosen platform. Ask your members questions, and get feedback. People like to be part of a community and social media can help you keep your members feel like they belong.
